Apprentice Fabricator - Spooner Industries

Job Description:

  • To set and operate MIG and TIG welding machinery, carrying out work on all types of materials (mainly steel)
  • To fabricate and weld frames, bases, canopies, tubes and any other bespoke work.
  • To assemble and build machines
  • To read and have good understanding of engineering drawing in order to produce fabrications and assembly machines
  • To monitor and inspect work for quality to ensure consistency with specifications
  • To work with hand tools
  • To be trained on all Company H&S policies and procedures in order to work safely
  • To maintain good general housekeeping of own work area

Qualification and educational requirements:

GCSE grade C or above in English and Maths (or the equivalent).

Training provided:

Mode of delivery: To attend the Keighley college 1 day a week over the 15/18 months alongside observations and assessments carried out in the workplace. An assessor will visit the place of work every 6-8 weeks.

Competence qualifications available to this pathway:

City and Guilds 7682-20 Level 2 NVQ Performing Engineering Operations.

  • Producing plate work components and assemblies
  • Preparing and using manual MIG/MAG and other continuous wire welding equipment 
  • Preparing and using manual TIG/TAG or Plasma-Arc
  • Preparing and using manual metal Arc welding equipment 

There will be a mandatory three-part holisitic end-point assessment starting no earlier than three months before the planned end of programme.

  • A theoretical knowledge test using multiple choice question papers containing generic questions relevant to all welders and specific questions relevant to the theoretical part of the skill/knowledge modules selected by the employer
  • A practical/oral examination compromising two practical tests and oral examination. The practical tests will be carried out in accordance with a recognised industry specification and will be in the most difficult welding positions for the skill/knowledge modules selected. The authorised examiner (appendix 1), responsible for supervising the tests, will also conduct an oral examination to assess the apprentices understanding of the tests he/she is undertaking and of the wider responsibilities of a welder
  • A professional interview which is designed to do two things: Firstly, to further explore the apprentices knowledge relevant to his/her role and secondly, to assess if the apprentices occupational behaviours meet the requirements specified in the apprenticeship standard. This must be carried out last.

In order to be successful, apprentices must pass all three parts.
