Research Lab Assistant - Cardiovascular - University of Bradford (Kickstart Placement)

Main purpose of the role:

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death globally, and approximately 22,000 people in the UK die of it every year. As we age our blood vessel function declines and we still don’t fully understand how this happens. Our research group has 3 PhD students studying changes in behaviour and cellular pathways that occur in ageing and disease, particularly in diabetes. This role is an opportunity to develop a range of laboratory skills in vascular cell biology, undertaking pilot experiments in this area. The project would suit a recent graduate in biomedical science or biomedical engineering or a candidate with A levels in scientific subjects who wishes to increase their practical skills and enhance their curriculum vitae.

Main Duties:

  • Carry out day-to-day research tasks encompassing growth of primary human cells, biochemical assays and functional experiments (proliferation, migration) to measure growth of the cells under different conditions, and cell staining.
  • Laboratory maintenance and housekeeping
  • Full training will be given.

Weekly Wage: Minimum Wage – dependent on age

Working week - contracted hours / full time / part time: 25 Hours per week, Monday to Friday. To be agreed on Appointment.

Essential skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email.
  • Excellent written and oral communications–detail focused, accurate and clear  
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work
  • Willingness to learn new skills including laboratory skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A levels in 2 science subjects including biology) at grade B or above

DESIRABLE:

  • Degree in in biological science or biomedical engineering
