Future Midwives Inspired at Bradford Midwifery Masterclass

The Careers and Technical Education team at SkillsHouse, in collaboration with Bradford Teaching Hospitals, successfully hosted a Midwifery Masterclass workshop that brought together over 150 enthusiastic students from Year 9, 10, and 11 across the Bradford District. This unique event provided an inspiring introduction to one of society’s most vital professions and offered students hands-on experiences that brought their classroom learning to life.

The event, tailored for students studying Health and Social Care or those interested in exploring the subject, featured a series of empowering talks by local midwives. These dedicated professionals shared their personal journeys into midwifery, showcasing the passion and purpose that drives their work.

Participants were fully immersed in a range of clinical skills masterclasses, including interactive sessions on the birthing process, infant feeding, infection control, and measuring and reading infant heart rates. These workshops were designed to highlight the critical health skills that midwives use every day while engaging students in a meaningful and practical way.

Darcy-Mae Cave, a Year 10 student from Bradford Academy, expressed her excitement about the event:
"It was an inspirational event that has made me think about a future career in midwifery. The midwives who spoke were so passionate and inspiring about their jobs – it looks like a really rewarding career."

This workshop exemplified how partnerships between SkillsHouse and Bradford Teaching Hospitals are helping young people connect their education to real-world opportunities in healthcare. By sparking interest and offering insight into the life-changing work of midwives, the event aimed to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Sarah Wilson, Careers Coordinator at Beckfoot School, commented:

"We spent a fantastic morning with the teams at Bradford Teaching Hospitals and SkillsHouse, who have put on an amazing event for Bradford students.  The young people from many different schools were engaged and inspired by the wonderful Midwifery staff that spoke with such knowledge and passion for their roles.  It is so important for our young people to hear from professionals about the different pathways to achieving their goals. Our aim is to empower students with knowledge and experience that will inspire their future choices, and today’s workshop did just that.""

Bradford Teaching Hospitals' representatives echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of investing in young talent to ensure the continued success and evolution of healthcare services in the region.
